NLP is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour".
NLP means Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that involves the three most influential components in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we interface and communicate with other people and our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create. Neuro-Linguistic Programming describes the basic relationship between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their affect our body and behavior (programming).
Let’s break down the name just a bit so you’ll understand the foundations before moving on. “Neuro” refers to the mind and how it influences and controls the body. It is much more than just the physical brain; rather, it is the way that the brain affects the body on both conscious and subconscious levels.
“Linguistic” refers to the way a person uses language (words, tone, statements, questions, etc.). Language is a powerful window into what a person thinks, and by observing a person’s language, it is possible to discover a great deal about him or her.
The last part of the name – “Programming” – creates confusion when it is not correctly defined. This part of NLP is not about programming a person to think certain things or do things a certain way, or feel a certain way. Instead, programming is the process of examining the patterns and thinking a person uses habitually (their programs) and how they affect that person’s life. Everyone has their own programs, but many people simply aren’t aware of them and the impact they have.

Neuro: Each individual has established their own unique mental filtering system for processing the millions of bits of data being absorbed through the senses. Our first mental map of the world is formed of internal images, sounds, tastes and smells that form as result of the neurological filtering process. The first mental map is called ‘First Access’ in NLP.
Linguistic: We then assign personal meaning to the information being received from the world outside. We form our second mental map by assigning language to the internal images, sounds and feelings, tastes and smells, thus forming everyday conscious awareness. The second mental map is called the Linguistic Map (sometimes known as Linguistic Representation)
Programming: The behavioural response that occurs as a result of neurological filtering processes and the following linguistic map.

Using the Power of Your Unconscious Mind
Our unconscious mind has a far greater influence and can accomplish far more than the conscious. NLP practitioners make the unconscious conscious. They are more consciously aware of what they do unconsciously. This gives them the power of managing their personal development in a way that enables hem to realize their true potential.
